day twenty: moving closer

The closer I come to my 30th birthday, the more excited I'm starting to feel. Which is totally surprising me. I can't think of anything I'm leaving behind, expect maybe good intentions, incomplete projects, and lots of slept in beds. Sometimes, when I can't sleep, I imagine every bed I've slept in for more than two week's time. You should try making your own list--no matter how old you are, it makes you feel like your life has already lasted for miles and miles and miles.

Slept-in-Beds (two weeks or more)
Childhood bedroom Indiana
Basement guestroom (with termites!) in aunt's rowhouse Bridgeport, Chicago
Mint in the backyard, oatmeal in the mornings grandparent's house Indiana
Sun tea on the porch, watermelon in the creek lakehouse Sturgis, Michigan
Dorm rooms, various Indiana
Haight-Ashbury Victorian, summer internship San Francisco
10th and Waverly walk-up, across from Nine Lives Bookshop Greenwich Village
NYU dorm, by the farmer's market Union Square
Loft above the Civic Theater with a huge vintage vault, Green House with slugs in the garden, blue house by the river Indiana
House by the arboretum, house with rats in the basement, co-op by the doughnut shop, Seattle

I got started, and had to finish, but the list is too long for a blog comment... here you go, anyway:

1) childhood captain's bed with drawers underneath and a shelf for books and treasures (outside Detroit, MI)
2) various bunk beds in various dorm rooms in Christian spin-off commune-like campus (N. Indiana)
3) budget townhouse-- same captain's bed (South Bend, IN)
4) high school house-- suburban ranch in a development that was named after what it once was: Northfield (Granger, IN)
5) freshman dorm (Muncie, IN)
6) cross between a dorm and an apartment, shared bathrooms and kitchen (Oxford, England)
7) sublet from professor, including all his furniture (and the bed in question, which had a tacky gold-chromed headboard), two cats and his college-aged daughter (Muncie)
8) weird cobbled together long skinny house with endless insect infestations (Muncie)
9) community house connected to a church that I didn't attend at the time (Muncie)
10) apartment shared with English graduate student (Buffalo, NY)
11) old house filled with junk from previous tenants (Buffalo)
12) summer in a room with not enough light, but with good friends (Muncie)
13) a few years in a tall peeling wooden house across from the white river (Muncie)
14) first apartment as a married woman, French doors overlooking synagogue (Muncie)
15) second apartment-- same house as you!-- dreamiest backyard (Muncie)
16) right here-- ground floor of a farmhouse in Ballard (Seattle)

Whew! Who's gonna read all that?
